Youth & Children
4-H Short Course
Our lab developed a Discover 4-H Short Course about aerodynamics for students age 12-18. The course covers the following topics:
Basic Aerodynamics
Airfoils
Building a Foam Glider
Building Custom Gliders
Using Computers to Design an Airplane
The course is designed especially for youth, and includes detailed instructions, plans, graphics, and questions that teach youth to reflect on what they have learned. You can get free access to this course as follows:
Scroll down the page and click on the course called "Aerodynamics"
Enter your name and email along with the other information they ask for. They use this information to track who is using their material and how many youth are being reached.
Upon completion of the form, you will receive an email link to download the course material.
Have fun!
A is for Alpha
A Young Pilot's Alphabet Book
Did you know pilots use a special alphabet when they talk on the radio? Come learn their alphabet so you can talk like a pilot! This fun and educational book introduces the phonetic aviation alphabet with incredible photos to help you remember each word. You will not only learn the word for each letter, but you’ll also get greater insight into aeronautics. Historical facts and current trends in aeronautics are highlighted throughout the book with incredible photos from the ground and the air.
AeroEducate™
Our lab supports the EAA® AeroEducate™ program for youth.
AeroEducate (aeroeducate.org) is a program created by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) in cooperation with North Carolina State University and in partnership with other companies and organizations from across the country and around the world.
At its core, AeroEducate is a completely FREE online program based on a curated series of rigorously vetted STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities and an innovative badging system. Students who participate in AeroEducate will explore and develop their interests in a wide variety of STEM-related subjects, using the excitement of aviation not only as the framework, but as a source of inspiration. By working through these activities, students will be able to track their progress — and even pick up some friendly bragging rights — by earning badges that will be nationally recognized by EAA and our partners.
AeroEducate provides teachers, parents, EAA chapters and other youth leaders a toolbox to help inspire future generations of aviators, engineers, mechanics, astronauts, and more by igniting their passion for aviation.
